Lasting from fall to late winter, Covid-19 isnʻt the only thing to watch out for, there is also another virus that circulates through the air known as influenza virus or the flu.

While many cases of flu are detected throughout the year, the flu is most prominent in the early fall to the late winter season. Known as Influenza, the flu attacks the lungs, throat, and nose. People who have low immune systems are at high risk should they contract the flu. Some of the symptoms include but are not limited to, fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is likely that you have contracted this virus. The flu is primarily treated with rest and lots and lots of fluids in order for the body to fight against the virus on itʻs own. According to Mayo Clinic, “Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers may help with symptoms.” In addition, an annual vaccine or flu shot can be taken to prevent the flu and limit some of its complications. Contact your doctor if there are any complications and get the assistance you need should you happen to contract this virus and nothing is helping.

While both Covid-19 and the flu are viruses that spread there are also differences between the two viruses that you should know to help distinguish which virus you or someone you know has contracted. While the severeness of illness for the flu varies depending on a person, Covid-19 has been seen to cause more severe and serious illness for many. Other signs of Covid include loss of taste and/or smell. In addition, it may take longer for symptoms of Covid-19 to appear, and Covid-19 makes a person contagious longer than the flu does.

This year, both Covid-19 and your seasonal flu will be out and about and continue to spread together. So be aware and remember to maintain social distancing, wear a mask, drink lots of water, and take care of yourself.
