Widely known throughout Kamehameha Schools as an accomplished water polo player and notable figure in student leadership, Leina’ala MaikapokealaulakalāoHakioawa Mei Yuk Wong has become a beacon of exceptional character, all while being fueled by a deep connection with her mother.

Beyond the pool, ‘Ala expresses a passion for traveling, cooking, reading, and surfing. Nevertheless, her drive as a student leader fueled by her mother is at the core of her story.

As the senior class president for the class of 2024 and one of the school’s choicest anchors for the morning news show “Puka Mai Ka La,” ‘Ala displays herself as a charismatic force of ambition. Unbeknownst to many, she holds an affinity for basketball, one of her main interests heading into college. Her love for the sport spearheads her plan to obtain a degree in broadcast journalism, and one day work as a sports analyst for ESPN, or acquire a communications degree and travel abroad. She also hopes to coach water polo somewhere in her future.

Ms. Wong’s journey as a student leader began in 7th grade when her mother coerced her to join student leadership. Although reluctant at first, this experience blossomed into an incredible journey that played a crucial role in who she has become today. She left middle school with a sense of purpose, bursting into the high school scene, and making a name for herself in student council; her mother’s guidance laying the groundwork for her future path.

Leina’ala’s exigence developed from her own personal experiences in school, where she found challenges in elementary school, where academic stability and support were in shortfall. The struggles of her past experiences drive her to transform the school into a sanctuary where education is accompanied by companionship and understanding, something she believes lacked in her own past.

‘Ala’s most important source of motivation and determination is her mother. Empowered to create a difference and driven by missed opportunities in her mother’s life, their relationship is a testament to a love that spans generations.

Leina’ala MaikapokealaulakalāoHakioawa Mei Yuk Wong intertwines athletic prowess and motivational leadership as a symbol of endurance, nurturing potential, and motherly support. As she traverses life’s currents and its next steps – in water polo and beyond – Leina’ala stands as a symbol of resilience, leadership, and a future shaped by the steadfast love and guidance of her mother.

Kaydn Ito, Reporter
Aloha! I’m Kaydn Ito and this is my first year on the Ka Mōʻī staff. I am from Kapālama, Oʻahu, and still live there today. Oh, and yes, I am the same guy from Puka Mai Ka Lā; one of the two curly-haired weirdos who call themselves twins. As a senior this year, I hope to utilize every asset of Ka Mōʻī to inspire and foster change as well as to empower and amplify the voices of others such as students, staff, and our community. Through Ka Moʻī, I hope to offer individuals and communities an opportunity to let their voices be heard because it is a human right. Being an avid sports photographer and photojournalist, I hope to apply my skills by weaving photos and words together to create powerful messages that allow others to speak their truth and compel their audience to action. I believe that pictures are truly worth a thousand words, and they can be used extremely effectively in writing to tell the most puissant stories. In the future, I plan to study photography seriously in college and become a full-time photographer, either as a war & news photojournalist, or a wedding photographer (fun fact, I’ve never taken a photography class! I am 100 percent self-taught). Through my work, I hope to create meaningful for the time being though, I hope to learn and grow as a writer, journalist, and photographer, and make incredible breakthroughs and connections throughout this school year.
