“And sunset o’er Kalaupapa, will be a dream come true.” Like “Sunset O’er
Kalaupapa,” Kalaupapa’s love song says, Kalaupapa will be a dream come true for those who
visit, especially for juniors in Concert Glee.
Being an annual tradition for juniors in Concert Glee, these students will fly to Kalaupapa
from Oct. 59.
Many juniors are excited to visit historic Kalaupapa including Tenor 1, Ian
Carroll.
“I’m really excited and honored to be able to go,” he says. “Not many people get this sort
of opportunity to visit a place like this.”
Kalaupapa currently has around nine surviving residents living there, and it is unknown
what will happen to the land after they all pass away. This is why the CGC kumu are so
persistent in having students be able to visit.
Kamalei Davis, a boarder from Moloka’i describes how she feels that students visiting
Kalaupapa will be impacted. “Going to Kalaupapa might change your perspective on the issues
of the past and how the people are down there. You’ll understand what happened in the past.”
Ka’iulani Fernandez, a Soprano 1 says, “I’m excited because ever since we did our play
on Hansen’s Disease in fifth grade, I’ve wanted to see what Kalaupapa was really like.”
“It’ll bring us full circle,” says Ian, referring to Kamehameha students who acted in the
Kalaupapa-themed 5th Grade Play in elementary school. “It will be very fun for us since we
fundraised to benefit their lives back then, and now we finally get to meet them.”
